Your lawn looks rough right now. Thin spots. Brown patches. Bare ground where grass used to be.
Here’s the good news: the best month of the year to fix it starts August 10.
Here’s the catch. Most of what you’ll read online tells you September. That advice is written for Omaha and Lincoln. We freeze earlier up here. If you wait for September, you’re going to be disappointed.
Why Fall Beats Spring
Ask most folks when to seed a lawn and they’ll say spring. They’re wrong, and it costs them every year.
Spring seeding puts new grass into a losing fight. Crabgrass and foxtail come up at the same time and grow faster. Then summer heat arrives before the roots are deep enough to handle it. A lot of spring seed never makes it to July.
Fall is the opposite. The soil is still warm from summer, so seed comes up fast. The air is cooling off, which is exactly what these grasses like. And summer weeds are done for the year, so your new grass has the ground to itself.
You get two full months of good growing weather. Then the grass sits through winter and comes back thick in spring.
Your Window Is August 10 to September 5
Norfolk’s first hard freeze usually lands around October 3.
Lincoln doesn’t freeze until October 12. Omaha holds out until the 17th.
That’s a two-week difference, and it’s why the standard advice doesn’t work here. Almost every lawn article you’ll find that says “eastern Nebraska” was written for the Lincoln–Omaha stretch. We’re nine to fourteen days ahead of them.
New grass needs time before that freeze. It has to come up, put down roots, and toughen up for winter. Count backward from October 3 and you land on September 5.
Seed between August 10 and September 5. That’s your window.
Why Every Week Counts
Seed the second week of August and your grass has plenty of time to get ready for winter.
Wait a few weeks and you don’t just lose those weeks. New grass grows slower as the days get shorter and cooler. Every week you put it off costs you two to four weeks of growth on the back end.
Seed on August 10 and you’re in good shape. Seed on September 5 and you’re cutting it close. Seed after that and you’re gambling.
One warning on tall fescue. It’s the toughest grass we sell for heat and drought, and it’s what a lot of Norfolk lawns are built on. But it’s also the slowest to toughen up for winter. September 5 is a hard stop for fescue. Miss it and there’s a real chance it won’t survive to spring.
Picking Your Seed
You don’t need to overthink this. Here’s the short version.
Mixed sun and shade? Grab a blend. Our Turf Perfect mixes put several grasses in one bag so you’re covered either way. Bluemaster, Overtime, and Perfection all work for a typical yard.
Heavy shade under trees? Shadow Mix. That’s what it’s built for.
Full sun, and you want something tough? Tall fescue. Best drought and heat tolerance we carry, and it rarely needs grub treatment. Just remember the September 5 deadline.
Want that thick, dark lawn? Kentucky bluegrass. It spreads on its own and heals itself from foot traffic. But it takes 10 to 28 days just to come up, and it drinks more water. Plan for the wait.
Need cover fast? Perennial ryegrass sprouts in five to seven days. Good for a spot that needs to look fixed right now.

How to Actually Do It
Mow it short first. Drop the deck lower than usual and bag the clippings. Seed has to reach dirt, not sit on top of grass.
Open up the ground. Rake hard, or rent a core aerator. Seed that touches soil sprouts. Seed sitting on thatch doesn’t.
Spread it. Use a spreader, not your hand. Go one direction, then go across it the other way. That’s what gets you even coverage instead of stripes.
Put down starter fertilizer. This one gets skipped and it shouldn’t. Starter is high in phosphorus, which is what builds roots. New grass needs roots more than it needs green. Ask for 18-46-0 when you buy your seed.
Water light and often. Not deep. New seed needs the top half inch damp all the time. That means a short watering once or twice a day for the first couple weeks. Once it’s up and you’ve mowed it a few times, switch to deep watering less often.
The Weed Mistake That Kills New Lawns
Do not put down crabgrass preventer where you’re seeding.
It works by stopping seeds from sprouting. It cannot tell the difference between crabgrass seed and your grass seed. People do this every fall and then wonder why nothing came up.
If you’ve got weeds and you want to seed anyway, there’s one product that handles it. Tenacity, which you’ll also see labeled as 21-22-4 Mesotrione, is the only weed control that’s safe to use with new grass seed. Ask us about it when you pick up your seed.
Two Things to Do After
Fall fertilizer starting September 1. This is the most important feeding of the whole year. It’s not about green grass this fall. It’s about building roots for next spring. An 18-18-18 works. Get it down before the ground freezes at the end of October.
Check your soil pH. If it’s been years, get a test. Lime takes three to six months to change your soil, so fall is the only sensible time to put it down. Winter freezing and thawing works it in for you. You can lime any time from September through mid-November.
