What is the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP)?
The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is a voluntary initiative that helps farmers and landowners improve soil health, water quality, and wildlife habitats by setting aside environmentally sensitive land. In return, participants receive annual rental payments and cost-share assistance to establish conservation-friendly land cover.
How Does CRP Work?
When land is enrolled in CRP, it is removed from agricultural production for 10 to 15 years and restored with native grasses, trees, or other vegetation to minimize erosion and boost environmental benefits.
Key Benefits of CRP
Reduces Soil Erosion – Protects topsoil and enhances land sustainability.
Improves Water Quality – Prevents runoff, reducing pollutants in water sources.
Creates Wildlife Habitats – Supports biodiversity and ecosystem health.
Offers Financial Incentives – Provides annual rental payments and cost-share support.
Types of CRP Enrollment
General CRP – Competitive sign-ups at designated periods.
Continuous CRP – Open enrollment for specific conservation practices.
Grasslands CRP – Supports working grazing lands while promoting conservation.
Who is Eligible to Apply?
Farmers and landowners with eligible land that meets cropping history or environmental criteria can apply. To participate, visit your local Farm Service Agency (FSA) office for more details.
